2nd ICMC East Africa Regional Mediation Conference

Mediation as a profession cannot just happen, it requires our collective active participation in making it happen. Many of us have been trained, but we have not developed business to keep us busy.  The problem is that mediators and problems requiring resolution have not readily found each other.

When we started the journey of mediation, the dream of a mediation-led conflict resolution framework seemed an easy win – create a large pool of mediators and the parties would come, bring their conflicts for us to resolve and reward us generously. It has not happened. Physically attending this conference gives us opportunities to band together to:

  • Discuss on how to build widespread community and commercial recognition of what mediation is and how it works. Imagine! Our people are not aware!
  • Work together to identify the broadest possible sources of potential demand and build effective referral networks
  • Plan how to persuade politicians and bureaucrats that mediation is a ‘value-adding’ pursuit, featuring durability and relationship repair rather than a ‘cheap and quick fix.
  • Create robust, centrally managed and readily accessible mentoring
  • Strategize on how to use social media to build brand recognition, not just for individuals but for the greater good of all mediators.

The theme of the 2022 conference is “Mediation in the future“. It is not too late but we do need to change a lot of our thinking around supply and demand. Work will not magically come to mediators.

There are opportunities all around us to lend our skills to those needing support in dealing with the many faces of conflict and there is no shortage of conflict!

Attending this conference will be a game changer for those who care to promote this profession in this region. Don’t miss this grand professional networking opportunity. The future is here!!
